Dortmund won 2-0 on aggregate to knock PSG out at the semi-final stage on Tuesday night, advancing to their third Champions League final. Sancho put in a stunning display in their 1-0 home leg win last week and did his bit in the second leg to add yet more drama to a topsy-turvy season for the 24-year-old. After the victory, the England international took to social media to cherish this achievement.
WHAT JADON SAID
After posting a picture of him celebrating his side’s victory, along with a team photo basking in their triumph, he wrote on Instagram: “Champions League Final! Wow wow wow, Unbelievable! @bvb09 🖤💛 WEMBLEY HERE WE COME! 🔥.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Earlier this season, Sancho was training with Manchester United’s under-18s after falling out with manager Erik ten Hag. The winger was shipped out on loan to Dortmund in January and after a slow start, he is impressing once again for his old side. The ex-Manchester City academy product may never play for United again – after proving to be something of a flop since his £73 million ($85m) move to Old Trafford in 2021 – but he is now just one win away from creating history at Dortmund.
DID YOU KNOW?
Incidentally, in the first leg, Sancho was the Bundesliga outfit’s chief attacking weapon but in Paris, he was able to nullify Kylian Mbappe, no less. He and right-back Julian Ryerson teamed up to limit the Frenchman to just five shots, with Sancho chalking up seven ball recoveries and six possessions won in the defensive and middle thirds. Moreover, Sancho had a forward passing percentage of 63.64 – the highest on the pitch, as he helped to relieve pressure on his team-mates.
WHAT NEXT?
After taking on Mainz and Darmstadt in the Bundesliga in their last two fixtures of the season, Dortmund will face either German rivals Bayern Munich or Real Madrid in the Champions League final at Wembley on June 1.
