Idris Elba is set to bring the iconic character Okonkwo to life in a new TV adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s classic novel, Things Fall Apart. The series, produced by A24, will feature Elba not only as the lead but also as a producer, adding another impressive role to his repertoire, which includes standout performances in Thor, The Suicide Squad, Pacific Rim, and Beasts of No Nation.
Elba’s talent has been widely recognized, particularly through his work in acclaimed TV series such as The Wire and Luther, as well as his portrayal of Nelson Mandela in the 2013 biopic Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.
According to an exclusive report by Variety, the project is still in its early stages with no writer attached yet, and it is currently seeking a streaming platform or network.
The official description of Things Fall Apart describes the story of Okonkwo, one of literature’s most compelling figures—a fearless African warrior and leader determined to preserve his people’s culture amidst the disruption brought by British colonizers. Okonkwo’s unyielding nature becomes his downfall in a narrative that explores the complex interplay of power, tradition, and the inevitability of change.
Elba will be joined by Gina Carter as an executive producer under their 22Summers production banner. Additional executive producers include David Oyelowo and Amanda N’Duka through Yoruba Saxon, with Ben Forkner, Dayo Ogunyemi, and Achebe Masterworks also playing key roles.
This isn’t the first time Achebe’s masterpiece has been adapted; it was previously brought to the screen in a 1971 film and a 1987 mini-series, where renowned Nigerian actor Pete Edochie famously portrayed Okonkwo, the revered wrestling champion of Umuofia.
With A24 backing the project, this adaptation promises to bring a fresh and powerful retelling of Achebe’s timeless narrative to a new generation.
