Aloy Ejimakor, the lead counsel for Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), on Thursday, urged President Bola Tinubu to release the Biafran activist.
Ejimakor pointed out that Tinubu had ascended to Nigeria’s presidency despite his previous opposition to a unified Nigeria.
In a 1997 interview with ThisDay, Tinubu had stated ‘I don’t believe in one Nigeria’.
However, posting on X, Ejimakor wrote: “Free Nnamdi Kanu because you were also once against one Nigeria
“In 1997, Tinubu proclaimed that he doesn’t believe in #OneNigeria but he went scot-free & became President. So, where lies the moral authority to detain MAZI NNAMDI KANU that said nothing different?”
The leader of IPOB continues to be detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) under the directive of the Nigerian government. Since his re-arrest in Kenya and subsequent repatriation to Nigeria, Kanu has been held to continue his trial concerning his advocacy for the realization of Biafra. Although there have been court rulings that granted him bail, the Nigerian government has not released him.
