President Bola Tinubu has recently made an announcement paying tribute to some of Nigeria’s most distinguished individuals by renaming several federal airports. This decision, deemed a crucial step in the ongoing reform of the aviation sector, was unveiled through a memo on Monday, June 1, 2023.
The memo, authored by Mrs. Joke Olatunji on behalf of the Director of Airport Operations, highlights the renaming of two airports. Firstly, the Maiduguri Airport will now be named in honor of the immediate past President, Muhammadu Buhari. Secondly, the Port Harcourt Airport will be renamed after the late nationalist, Obafemi Awolowo.
Furthermore, as part of this commendable initiative, the Nasarawa Airport has been officially named in tribute to the late founder of the Sokoto Caliphate, Usman Dan Fodio.
In addition to that, several other esteemed individuals have been posthumously honored through the renaming of airports. The Benin Airport will now bear the name of the late Oba Akenzua II, the revered monarch of Benin. Similarly, the Ebonyi Airport has been designated to commemorate the late Senate President, Chuba Okadigbo. Lastly, the Ibadan Airport will pay homage to the late Premier of the old Western Region, Ladoke Akintola.
