The All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on Nigerians to rally behind President Bola Tinubu, asserting that his administration is laying a strong economic foundation that requires time and support to yield results.
The statement from APC followed comments by Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, who in his New Year message expressed concerns over Nigeria’s deteriorating political, economic, and security conditions.
Mr. Obi emphasized that despite claims of progress, the country continues to rank among the world’s poverty capitals, with over 100 million people living in extreme poverty and 150 million experiencing multi-dimensional poverty.
“The N70,000 minimum wage is useless as workers cannot afford a bag of rice or half a bag of beans,” Mr. Obi remarked, urging President Tinubu to cut governance costs and redirect resources toward critical areas such as security, health, education, and poverty alleviation.
He also advocated for a more visible and aggressive approach to fighting corruption, calling for thorough investigations and the recovery of misappropriated funds.
APC Responds to Obi’s Claims
In a statement issued on Thursday, APC spokesperson Felix Morka dismissed Mr. Obi’s assertions as “misleading and intended to score cheap political points.”
Mr. Morka highlighted what he described as significant economic progress in the last 18 months, citing steady growth, trade surpluses, and increased foreign direct investments. He attributed these gains to growing confidence in the economy, an improved foreign reserve, and a reduced debt servicing ratio from 90% to approximately 64%.
“President Tinubu has acknowledged that the cost of food and essential drugs remains a significant concern for many Nigerian households. He has assured that his administration is committed to lowering food prices by boosting food production and promoting local production of drugs,” said Mr. Morka.
He added, “He has also vowed to reduce inflation from 34% to 15% during this fiscal year. With the vigour in the administration’s war on corruption, Tinubu is turning the nation’s fortunes around.”
Focus on Workers’ Welfare
Mr. Morka underscored Tinubu’s commitment to workers’ welfare, noting the administration’s readiness to consider a national living wage to improve the living standards of Nigerians.
“This is a significant move, as it shows that the government is willing to listen to workers’ concerns and take concrete steps to improve their welfare,” he said.
The APC spokesperson concluded by urging Nigerians to exercise patience and support President Tinubu’s administration as it strives to deliver sustainable growth and a vibrant, prosperous Nigeria.
